Finding Meaning in Life’s Pivots

“The only constant in life is change.” — Heraclitus

I’m not sure when I first heard this quote, but it stayed with me. Maybe because it’s true in a way we don’t always want to admit.

We grow comfortable in the sameness of our days: our routines, our roles, the version of life we’ve quietly learned to expect. And then something shifts and interrupts that rhythm, and suddenly, everything feels unfamiliar.

Life sometimes arrives like a storm: Strong winds. Heavy rain. A sky that darkens without warning. And for a moment you can’t see clearly anymore.

But not every storm comes to disrupt your life. Some come to clear your path.

Thunderstorm in a field

Storms nourish the earth. They water trees, plants, and flowers reaching roots that haven’t been touched in a while. They cool the air after long periods of heaviness. They move stagnant energy, breaking what’s been stuck for too long. They cleanse the atmosphere, washing away dust so the world can feel new again.

And sometimes... they strip away what was never meant to stay.

Most changes carry that same quiet purpose, even when they feel abrupt. We resist them at first. We question them. We try to hold on to what was, because it feels safer than stepping into something unknown. But if you allow yourself to look around instead of fighting it, you begin to notice that there is something new here. Something to learn. Something to see differently. Something to grow into.

If you hadn’t been pushed onto that unexpected road, you would have never found the one that quietly branches off from it - the one that leads somewhere you couldn’t have planned. The one where the magic happens.

When we allow ourselves to be guided instead of controlled, that’s when transformation begins.

I can think of three major pivots in my life. Each one changed me in its own way, but the most recent one shifted something deeper. It led me into a level of self-discovery I wasn’t expecting and I can see now that timing mattered. If it had happened earlier, I don’t think I would have understood it the same way. I needed everything that came before it: the experiences, the lessons, even the struggles, to prepare me to receive it. To be ready for it.

At the time, it felt like something was being taken away from me. Like I was losing a part of who I was, but what I didn’t realize was that I was holding on to something that was never truly my path.

That storm revealed something to me.

It guided me toward a path that had always been there, quietly waiting, but one I kept resisting out of fear. Fear of not being ready. Fear of not believing in myself. Fear of stepping into something that felt bigger than what I knew.

And I think so many of us go through something like this, but when you’re in the middle of it, you can’t always see the meaning. Being inside a storm is disorienting. It’s loud. It’s overwhelming. It feels endless. But then… it passes. And what’s left behind is something softer.

The air feels cooler and cleaner. The scent of rain settling into the earth. Drops of water clinging to leaves, catching the light like tiny crystals. Puddles reflecting the sky like little mirrors. The quiet that follows… almost like the world is taking a deep breath. Even the birds return, cautiously at first, then freely.

And somewhere in that stillness, you begin to notice:

You made it through.

You’re still here.

And something in you feels different. Stronger. Clearer. Maybe even… lighter.

So when life begins to shift… when the winds pick up and everything feels uncertain… maybe you don’t need to fight it. Maybe you just need to trust that something is being cleared so something more aligned can finally come into view. 🌻

What’s one change in your life that felt like it came in like a storm…but, over time, guided you somewhere you never expected? Sit with that question for a moment. The answer might surprise you.

If you're in the middle of a pivot right now - if something is shifting and you're not quite sure what it means yet, I made something for exactly that feeling. The Quiet Shift is a free guide to help you slow down, find perspective, and reconnect with yourself through nature and everyday moments. You can find it here. 🌿
