The Most Important Tank to Fill

That morning started the way the good ones do.

The night before, I had taken care of everything: laid out my clothes, mapped out my workout, set my alarm. All I had to do was wake up and show up.

And I did. Sort of.

The sun was just beginning to rise when my alarm went off, and as always, there was the sacred first ritual: cuddle time with each of my three dogs before my feet even touched the floor. Being delayed for that reason? Absolutely okay.

They followed me downstairs to my home gym - all three of them - and immediately made themselves comfortable on the couch for their first nap of the day. Classic.

Fifteen minutes into my routine, something felt off and I didn't feel good. I tried to push through it, but my body had already made its decision. I stopped, went upstairs, showered, and ate breakfast before heading to work.

That was odd, I thought.

And then I did what most of us do even though we know better: I googled my symptoms. Which, as you probably know, is a reliable way to convince yourself you are either mildly dehydrated or actively dying. Fortunately, it was the former - dehydration, and the fact that I had gone straight to the gym without eating a single thing first.

I knew better. I just hadn't thought about it.

Later that day, I mentioned the whole situation to a friend who then said:

"A car can't go very far without a full tank."

He was right. And once he said it, I couldn't stop seeing it everywhere.

Always take care of yourself

A car needs fuel to move forward. A phone needs to be charged to function. A plant left without water will reach for the light, but still wilt.

We see these things every single day. We take care of them without a second thought because we know that they obviously won't work without it. And yet...

We wake up running on empty, skip breakfast, push through the exhaustion, and genuinely wonder why we feel like we're falling apart by noon.

And I wonder why we think we are the exception.

🔸 Maybe it's because refueling ourselves doesn't feel as urgent or as visible as plugging in a phone.

🔸 Maybe we've spent so long running on low that it started to feel normal.

🔸 Maybe somewhere along the way, we decided that taking care of ourselves was optional, something to get to after everything else was handled.

But here's what that morning reminded me:

That workout that didn't happen taught me more than most full ones have.

We take care of our cars, our phones, our homes - we know they won't run without it. And yet we wake up, skip breakfast, push through, and wonder why we feel empty halfway through the day.

You are not the exception to the rule. You are the most important thing that needs tending.

Start there. 🌻
